Chapter 2: THE MARK ABOVE HER EYEBROW

“Give me my phone.”

Madison’s voice sounded different.

The mocking confidence had vanished.

There was no cruel laughter now, no exaggerated smile, no attempt to turn the moment into another public humiliation.

She was still sitting on the restroom floor, but her attention had shifted completely away from Nora.

Everything seemed to depend on getting the phone back into her hands.

Nora stood near the damaged mirror, trying to understand what she had just seen.

The notification remained visible.

CONFIRM BLOOD SAMPLE VISIBLE.

The words were simple enough.

Yet together, they made no sense.

Why would anyone ask Madison to confirm the presence of blood?

Why would such a message arrive only seconds after Nora’s forehead had been injured?

Nora looked toward the phone again.

She had never seen a message like it before.

There was no explanation beneath the notification.

No familiar name that helped her understand who might have sent it.

Just the strange instruction on a glowing screen.

“Madison,” she whispered.

“What is that?”

Madison’s jaw tightened.

“None of your business.”

Nora stared at her.

“How is that none of my business?”

Madison reached toward the phone.

“Give it back.”

Nora did not move.

She had not taken the phone.

It remained on the floor between them.

But Madison was behaving as though Nora were deliberately keeping it from her.

Nora understood that the other girl wanted to prevent her from seeing anything more.

That made the message impossible to ignore.

“Why is someone asking you about blood?”

Madison looked up sharply.

“Stop asking questions.”

Nora felt a fresh wave of anger.

“You hurt me.”

Madison looked away.

“You pushed me.”

“Because you wouldn’t let me leave!”

Her voice rose unexpectedly.

The sound startled her.

She had spent so long speaking quietly around Madison that hearing her own anger felt unfamiliar.

But the situation was no longer about whether Nora had embarrassed someone in the cafeteria.

It was no longer about an insulting remark or a stolen moment of peace.

Something had happened inside the restroom that she could not understand.

And Madison’s reaction suggested that the truth might be worse than anything Nora had imagined.

Nora touched her forehead again.

The injury was beginning to sting more sharply.

She looked at the small amount of blood on her fingers.

Then at the phone.

She remembered the way Madison had grabbed her hair.

The way her face had been directed toward the mirror.

The sudden, precise impact near her left eyebrow.

Nora did not want to believe the incident had been planned.

That possibility was too strange.

Too frightening.

Yet the message existed.

It had appeared at exactly the wrong moment to be dismissed.

“Tell me who sent that,” Nora said.

Madison shook her head.

“Forget about it.”

“How?”

“Just forget it!”

The force of Madison’s response filled the room.

Nora stepped back slightly.

Not because she thought the blonde girl was right.

Because the fear in Madison’s face was becoming impossible to ignore.
