“I can see that.”

Martha shook her head.

“Not just my ankle.”

He became still.

She struggled to find the right words.

“I fell in front of everyone.”

Her voice trembled.

“I was frightened and embarrassed.”

Daniel squeezed her hand.

“I know.”

“And Vanessa laughed.”

Vanessa made an impatient sound.

Martha continued before she could interrupt.

“She laughed while I was trying to get up.”

Daniel looked toward his bride.

Martha swallowed.

“Then she stopped your father from helping me.”

Silence followed.

Even Trevor seemed uncertain what to say.

Daniel stood slowly.

He looked at Vanessa for a long moment.

“Why?”

She blinked.

“Why what?”

“Why would you block my father?”

Vanessa drew her shoulders back.

“Because everybody was overreacting.”

Daniel studied her.

“Was Mom standing?”

“No.”

“Was she hurt?”

“I didn’t know.”

“Did you ask?”

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel waited.

She eventually answered.

“No.”

He rubbed his jaw.

“Then how could you know everybody was overreacting?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with frustration.

“Daniel, I was under pressure.”

He nodded once.

“I understand weddings are stressful.”

Her expression softened slightly.

Then he continued.

“But I don’t understand laughing when someone gets hurt.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re taking their side.”

Daniel looked genuinely pained.

“Why does there have to be a side?”

Trevor stepped forward.

“Because your parents are trying to ruin your wedding.”

Chapter 1: The Name Beneath the Vessel021
Martha felt the accusation settle heavily in her chest.

Henry turned toward Trevor.

“Don’t put that on her.”

Trevor laughed.

“She’s been making this a huge production.”

Daniel’s face reddened.

“Trevor, stop.”

But Trevor continued.

“Seriously, she slipped. Now everybody wants somebody to blame.”

Henry looked at him.

“Then why did you warn her to move?”

Trevor hesitated again.

Daniel noticed.

His expression changed.

“What exactly did you say to her?”

Trevor shrugged.

“I told her to watch out.”

Martha shook her head.

“No.”

All three men looked toward her.

“You told me to get out of the way.”

Trevor spread his hands.

“Same difference.”

“It isn’t,” Daniel said.

Trevor stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“You knew she was there.”

Martha saw Trevor’s jaw tighten.

For the first time, his confidence looked less convincing.

But Vanessa immediately intervened.

“This is ridiculous.”

She turned toward Daniel.

“We’re supposed to be getting married.”

He looked at her.

“I haven’t forgotten.”

“Then start acting like it.”

The words carried enough force to make Martha flinch.

Daniel did not respond immediately.

Vanessa continued.

“Everyone came here for us.”

She gestured toward the garden.

“People traveled from all over the country.”

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Martha understood the pressure.

Guests had booked hotels.

Relatives had traveled from different states.

The venue had been reserved for months.

Thousands of dollars had already been spent.

An enormous celebration waited outside.

Nobody wanted to imagine stopping it.

Martha certainly didn’t.

Despite everything, part of her still wanted Daniel to have the day he expected.

She wanted the pain to disappear.

She wanted Vanessa to apologize sincerely.

She wanted Trevor to admit his mistake.

She wanted everyone to return to the garden with some dignity intact.

But she knew that pretending nothing happened would not accomplish any of those things.

It would merely bury the humiliation.

And she had spent too many years burying uncomfortable truths.

A soft knock interrupted the argument.

Claire appeared at the doorway.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“It’s okay.”

Claire looked toward Martha.

“The car is ready.”

Henry nodded.

“Thank you.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

She looked at Daniel.

“Can we have the ceremony before they leave?”

Martha stared at her.

The request seemed impossible to believe.

Her ankle was swelling beneath the blanket.

Her dress remained covered in mud.

Medical care had already been arranged.

Yet Vanessa wanted her to remain until the ceremony ended.

Daniel appeared equally stunned.

“Vanessa.”

“What?”

“Mom needs to see a doctor.”

“She can go afterward.”

Henry stepped closer.

“No.”

Vanessa glared.

“I wasn’t asking you.”

Henry’s expression hardened.

“You’re discussing my wife’s medical care.”

“I’m discussing our wedding.”

“And I’m telling you she is leaving.”

The exchange grew quiet.

Daniel looked at the floor.
