Vanessa watched him expectantly.

Martha knew what she wanted.

She wanted Daniel to contradict Henry.

She wanted him to prove his loyalty.

She wanted him to choose the wedding over the injured woman in the chair.

Martha felt sick.

She wished she could spare her son that decision.

But she could not make it for him.

Daniel finally looked up.

“My parents are going to urgent care.”

Vanessa blinked.

“What?”

“They need to go.”

She stared at him.

“And you’re just letting them?”

Daniel frowned.

“Of course.”

Vanessa looked furious.

“Then who walks down the aisle with your father?”

Daniel seemed confused.

“What?”

“We planned the family entrance.”

He stared at her.

“My mother is injured, Vanessa.”

She threw up her hands.

“I know!”

“Then why are you talking about the entrance order?”

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

No answer came.

For a brief moment, Martha thought she might finally recognize the absurdity.

But Trevor interrupted again.

“Can we stop acting like she broke every bone in her body?”

Henry moved toward him.

Daniel immediately stepped between them.

“Dad.”

Henry stopped.

Martha saw his hands tighten.

He had restrained himself throughout the afternoon.

But Trevor continued speaking as though nothing mattered.

Daniel looked at him.

“Leave.”

Trevor blinked.

“Excuse me?”

“Give us a minute.”

Trevor looked toward Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“Daniel, don’t.”

He kept his eyes on Trevor.

“I asked you to leave.”

Trevor gave an incredulous laugh.

“It’s my sister’s wedding.”

“And she’s still here.”

Trevor studied him.

Then his expression hardened.

“Fine.”

He walked toward the doorway.

As he passed Martha, he shook his head.

“This is unbelievable.”

Martha did not respond.

She watched him disappear into the hallway.

The silence after his departure felt enormous.

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.

Vanessa stood beside the window, breathing sharply.

Henry returned to Martha’s side.

Claire waited discreetly near the door.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel turned toward his mother.

“I’m sorry.”

Martha looked up.

He swallowed.

“I should have been outside.”

She shook her head.

“You were getting ready.”

“I should have known.”

“You couldn’t have.”

He looked at her ruined dress.

His voice became smaller.

“I hate seeing you like this.”

Martha reached for him.

He knelt beside her again.

She touched his face gently.

“This isn’t your fault.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

But Henry spoke.

“Daniel.”

Their son looked up.

“You didn’t cause the fall.”

He paused.

“But what happens next is your responsibility.”

Martha looked toward her husband.

The words were serious.

Yet Henry spoke without anger.

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I understand.”

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

“Apparently everyone thinks I should apologize.”

Daniel turned.

“Do you?”

She looked confused.

“What?”

“Do you think you should?”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion.”

Daniel stared.

Martha saw disappointment settle into his face.

It was different from anger.

Anger might have been easier.

He looked at Vanessa as though he were trying to recognize her.

“You laughed at my mother.”

Vanessa looked down.

“It was surprising.”

“Then you blocked Dad.”

“I didn’t want a scene.”

Daniel glanced toward Martha.

“She was lying in the mud.”

Vanessa’s lips tightened.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it matters.”

Martha watched him carefully.

He seemed to be hearing his own words.

Not simply defending his parents.

Not simply resisting Vanessa.

He was beginning to understand what marriage would demand of him.

It would require choices.

Some would be uncomfortable.

Some would disappoint people.

But avoiding those choices would be a choice itself.

Daniel looked toward the garden.

The ceremony arch remained visible.

White ribbons fluttered in the breeze.

Guests waited in scattered groups.

The officiant spoke quietly with Claire’s assistant.

Everything looked ready.

Yet nothing felt ready anymore.

Daniel turned back.

“Vanessa, I need you to tell me something.”

She sighed.

“What now?”

“Do you believe Trevor deliberately blocked my mother?”

Vanessa glanced toward Martha.

Then toward Henry.

“I think she misunderstood what happened.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because I need to know.”

She took a breath.

“Trevor wouldn’t intentionally hurt anyone.”

Martha looked down.

That was not an answer.

It was a statement about the person Vanessa wanted her brother to be.

Henry seemed to think the same.

“Then nobody should object to finding out.”

Daniel turned.

“How?”

Henry looked toward the window.

“People were watching.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“Are you seriously going to question the guests?”

Henry negó con la cabeza.

“Voy a preguntarles qué vieron.”

Vanessa soltó una carcajada.

“Increíble.”

Claire habló desde la puerta.

“En realidad, puede que haya algo útil.”

Todos la miraron.

Ella dudó.

“El fotógrafo estaba cerca del paseo.”

Daniel frunció el ceño.

“¿Miguel?”

“Sí.”
