Christian explained that the original hotel security recording had been preserved and provided to the appropriate authorities. The public excerpt concealed Emily’s face, but the unedited evidence remained available to investigators.
He did not discuss his daughter’s medical records or expose the details of her examination.
Emily had already suffered enough.
Vanessa interrupted before the trustee could respond.
“That child has been causing trouble for months!”
The words escaped before she could stop herself.
Christian turned.
Across the ballroom, the angry murmuring intensified.
Vanessa tried to recover, describing Emily as emotionally unstable after losing her mother. She claimed the girl deliberately created problems whenever Christian returned from business trips, hoping to drive them apart.
A woman near the front shook her head in disgust.
Vanessa raised her voice.
“She throws tantrums! She lies! She’ll say anything to get attention!”
Christian stepped toward the microphone.
“Enough.”
The single word silenced her.
“You’ve already hurt my daughter. You will not stand here and blame her for what you did.”
Vanessa’s face twisted with anger.
For a moment, the polished woman who had welcomed donors with warm smiles disappeared. She looked exactly as she had in the elevator corridor.
“You were never home!” she shouted. “You left me to deal with her!”
The ballroom went quiet again.
Christian accepted the accusation without looking away. He had been absent, and he would spend a long time regretting it. But his mistakes could never excuse a grown woman deliberately hurting a child entrusted to her care.
He told the audience that he had failed to recognize Emily’s suffering sooner. He had trusted someone who used that trust to isolate his daughter.
Several guests lowered their eyes.
Many of them had admired the Vance family from a distance, never imagining what happened inside their home.
Vanessa began crying again.
She approached Christian, reaching for his arm as cameras followed every movement.
“Please. We can settle this privately.”
Christian moved away.
She had offered the same bargain earlier that evening: money, silence, and a divorce that would allow her to leave without consequences.
Now she was trying it before five hundred witnesses.
A foundation director stepped forward and quietly informed Vanessa that the board would review her position immediately. Two major donors had already instructed their representatives to suspend further contributions connected to her programs.
Vanessa stared at him.
These were people who once competed for invitations to her private parties.
Now they were treating her like a stranger.
She turned back to Christian, her eyes blazing.
“You think you can humiliate me and walk away? I’ll take everything from you.”
